Thinking inside the box™

When running multiple Oracle database instances on one server it is vital that critical instances are able to gain priority access to system resources when required. This is necessary to prevent requests being timed out and ensure Service Level Agreements are met. SmartPeak WLM can be implemented on servers running Oracle 10g Database Server and Microsoft Windows Server 2003 to guarantee the allocation of system resources to individual instances of Oracle.

The use of SmartPeak WLM ensures that critical Oracle 10g Server applications will never be denied access to system resources due to a resource conflict caused by heavy utilization by other Oracle instances or other applications running on the same machine.

Oracle does provide Automatic Workload Management functionality as part of the Real Application Cluster (RAC) software. RAC is Oracle’s approach to grid computing, and is appropriate for use in large enterprise scale cluster implementations which justify the load-balancing of transactions across multiple nodes. SmartPeak WLM is a more appropriate choice to achieve dynamic workload management in Oracle database server implementations that do not justify the cost and management overhead of RAC.
